September 2013 Meeting

HILL COUNTRY SMOCKING GUILD
September 16, 2013
Meeting called to order by president, Melissa.   Eleven members and one visitor were in attendance.
Elissa made a motion to approve minutes as posted on blog. Minutes approved.   
Treasurer’s report:  Balance of $1,167.46.   Checking account balance as of 8/31/2013: $205.80.  Savings account balance as of 8/31/2013: $961.66.
Old Business:
Bring completed Wee Care projects to October meeting and receive special tickets for door prize.
New Business:
            Officer Committee report: Presented Slate of Officers as follows:
            President: Deanna Heims
            Vice-Presidents: Elissa Powell and Melissa Atterberry
            Treasurer:  Mary Scrudder
            Secretary: Lise Waring
Sharon moved accept slate of officers by acclamation.  Motion seconded by Tony.  Officers for 2013 – 2015 elected unanimously by members.
Treasurer audit will be done by Elissa and Lise.  Dot may be present to answer any questions that may arise.
Door Prize:
            Beautiful embroidery scissors was won by Melissa.
Show and Share:
Patti showed a beautiful framed sampler (Ellen McCarn design) that she did when she first learned to smock.
Melissa brought in a sun dress she made for Eloise.  Black polka dot shoulder yoke with the body of dress a darling Little Mermaid fabric.
Virginia showed a variety smocked inserts.
Kim showed a yoke dress with Teapot mice picture smocking.
Dot did picture smocking on a white, imperial broadcloth yoke dress.  She smocked both front and back with bluebirds.  Smocking design by Mollie Jane Taylor “Bluebirds” This design has green vine with pink flowers and bluebirds perched on the vines. Dress also has pink ribbon woven across bodice front and back with ties at the side.  Dress Pattern is “Lee” from Children’s Corner .
Program:
Kim Davies presented program on stacked string of hearts for a Christmas ornament.

The guild is looking for program suggestions.  Some ideas presented were:  Wee Care, Christmas Balls, Picture smocking, and a Sampler.  Please bring your ideas for a program to the next meeting.

August 2013 Meeting


HILL COUNTRY SMOCKING GUILD
August 19, 2013



Meeting called to order by president, Melissa.   Eight members were in attendance.
Minutes approved as amended.   Amendment:  By-laws changed to indicate a raise in Hill Country Smocking Guild dues from $10.annually to $20.annually.  No other changes in the by-laws.  Motion to approve amended minutes made by Dot and seconded by Patti.   Mary needs a copy of amended by-laws for blog and a copy needs to be submitted to SAGA.
 Treasurer’s report:  Balance of $1,167.31.  Minutes approved.
Communications:
Haley Gardner from Selma, Alabama wants to learn how to smock and construct garments.  She is interested in Hill Country Smocking Guild.
Tony isn't feeling well.  She has been missed at guild and hope she returns soon.
Elissa is busy working and vacationing in Oklahoma.
Old Business:
Texas/Austin themed items for SAGA basket need to be brought to September guild meeting to allow time to assemble for convention.
Dot reported that there has not been any news concerning HCSG’s non-profit status.

Show and Share:
Patti and Sharon showed completed cupcake pincushions.  Kim recommended using quilters thread to stitch cup to smocked section.
Melissa found a new fabric store in Austin.  The store primarily has knit fabrics.  The store is “Stitched Fabric Boutique” at 720 Taylor Street. (around Airport and Lamar)
Lise: completed her square dance dress.  The bodice is solid purple with a 5 point star neckline.  Skirt and puffed sleeves made of ¼ inch purple and white stripes.  Sleeves are counterchange smocked with 2 quilting threads.  Sleeve hems are hand rolled.
Dot has been busy!  1.  Multi-color chevron sundress with knotted ties on bodice in a hot pink and white geometric print.  Band and knotted ties are in yellow/white polka dots.  Pattern:  Indigo Junction – “Sister Smocks”.   2.  Turquoise with butterflies in orange, pink, green and yellow print A-line jumper with knotted ties at shoulders.  Dress lined in orange/white print.  Pattern Bonnie Blue Designs “Bridget”.  3.  Pillowcase dress in purple, turquoise and white large floral print with coordination band at bottom and ties in purple, turquoise, green and white polka dots.  4.  Hot pink little girl’s tee shirt with monogrammed pocket in multi-color chevron fabric.    5.  Little boy’s tee shirt with number 4 appliqued in sports fabric with Mickey Mouse ears at top of #4.  Dot did this shirt for her grandson.   6.  Dot wore white tee shirt with “Love” spelled out in different coordinating fabrics with Mickey Mouse as the letter “O”.  She appliqued 11 Mickey Mouse shirts for the family Disney World trip this summer.  I think she deserves a rest!
Program:
Wee Care smocked bonnet for a 24 week gestation baby presented by Kim Davies.

May 2013 Meeting




Meeting called to order by Deanna.  Twelve members and one visitor
were in attendance.

Minutes as presented were approved.

 Treasurer’s report:  Balance of $1,166.86.  Minutes approved.

Committee Report:

By-laws Committee (Mary, Melissa and Elisse) reviewed changes to by-laws: end of year will be changed to December to coordinate with SAGA dues, Hill Country Smocking dues will be increased to $15 per
year.  SAGA dues amount should not be included in Hill Country by-laws.  Motion was made by Dot to accept by-law changes as presented.  Motion was seconded by Patti.  By-laws passed by acclamation.

Old Business:

Basket for SAGA convention:  Mary brought a Texas reusable grocery bag for the basket and encouraged members to bring Texas themed items for the basket by September meeting.

 A discussion was held to move HCSG meeting date in October due to conflict with SAGA convention.  Decision by members to keep regularly scheduled meeting date and time.

Dot reported that there has not been any news concerning HCSG’s non-profit status.

New Business:

Committee for developing slate of officers for next year will consist of: Patti Bullock, Dot Griffin and Elissa Powell.  Officers elect will be presented and voted upon at September meeting.

Door Prize:

Karen Morris, Elissa’s friend from Georgia, won the Thread and Scrap Caddy door prize.

Show and Share:

Elissa: showed a beautiful white dotted Swiss with blue ribbon dress. The dress was Lee pattern with Angel Threads Sydary collar. Embroidery was a combination of designs.  Dotted Swiss from Vaune Pierce and Bearissima collar.  Blue double faced silk satin ribbons.

Marcy was working on the block of the month for a class she is teaching.  Quilt pattern is Contessa.

Sharon displayed her Christmas duplicate sweater that she did years ago.

Program:

Shared yummy cupcakes then Kim presented class on smocked cupcake. Bring smocked cupcake to August meeting to complete.

April 2013 Meeting


HILL COUNTRY SMOCKING GUILD
April 15, 2013
Meeting called to order by President Melissa.  Nine members and one
visitor were in attendance.

Minutes as presented were approved.

 Treasurer’s report:  Balance of $1,166.70.  Deanna made motion to approve treasurer’s report as submitted.  Motion seconded by Lise. Minutes approved by members.

Committee Report:

By-laws Committee (Mary, Melissa and Elisse) reviewed by-laws and made suggestions for corrections and changes.  E-mail of proposed corrections and changes will be sent to Members.

Communications:

E-mail from Mary Berry stating that Gift Basket from all Texas Guilds for convention will not happen.  Hill Country Smocking guild will send an Austin themed basket.

E-mail from church—new security system is in process of being installed.  Mary will need to sign a new contract.  Guild will be charred if alarm is set of falsely.  Everyone will need to enter by back door.  We have also been asked not to park in staff parking at any time...

New Business:

Carol Ahles will not be at Martha’s Market.  Martha’s Market will be combined with Scrapbooking Convention.  Martha will not have a table at Market.  FW Media bought Martha’s business and they were the ones to make this decision.  Elissa suggested writing to FW Media telling them that the combination of fine sewing and scrap booking will not work.  Can write through:  Martha Pullen.com/events/Scapbooking/Sewing.

Committee will be formed in May to select slate of officers to be presented in August and voted upon in September.

Old Business:

Dot is still working with IRS for HCSG’s reinstatement of non-profit organization.

Door Prize:

Kim Davies won door prize consisting of Heirloom Embroidery Scissors and a Sewing machine key ring.

Show and Share:

Ginnie Wolf (visitor) showed Black and white chevron skirt with black elastic waist.  Red and black ribbon trim with a red flower.  Very cute!

Kim Davies had a darling dress with counter change hearts design by Ann Halby Designs.  Basic dress was Mary De by Children’s Corner.

Dot showed an orange/white chevron pillowcase dress with bright floral ruffle and floral tie on one shoulder.
Sharon displayed two Bitty Jelly Roll purses with flower decorations.

Lise: likes making men’s shirts in the western style.  She made one in black with peppers and a red diamond shaped yoke and cuffs with yellow contrast piping. The next shirt was brown and gray stripes with a
contrasting diamond pattern stripe.  Lise also made a square dance dress with a smocked waistband (her project when Marcy taught her to smock) done in green imperial broadcloth with smocking of brown,
orange and yellow.  A coordinating western shirt with the cuffs smocked to the waistband and yellow bias tape instead of piping.

Program:

Learning counter change with Kim Davies was fun and encouraged the members to want to try on other garments.

The program for May will be smocked cupcakes.  Kim asked that we bring real cupcakes to

March 2013 meeting


HILL COUNTRY SMOCKING GUILD
March 18, 2013

Meeting called to order by President Melissa.  Twelve members were in
attendance.

Minutes as presented were approved.

 Treasurer’s report: Balance of $1,126.53 reflects payment to IRS for
reinstatement as a non-profit organization.  Discussion followed and
then report approved as presented. Motion by Deanna and seconded by
Patti.

Committee Report:
By-laws Committee (Mary, Melissa and Elissa) reviewed by-laws and made
suggestions for corrections and changes.  E-mail of proposed
corrections and changes will be sent to Members.

Communications:
The new SAGA magazine has all the information for October National
Convention in it.  May 1st is the first day you can register for
classes.

New Business:
Welcome new member Lisa Waring.
New Guild business cards were distributed by Melissa.

Old Business:
Workshop at Dot’s on April 14th at 2pm to work on favors for national
convention.

Door Prize:
Deanna was the happy recipient of beauty supplies.  Kit was pleased
with the combination cutting mat and ironing mat.

Show and Share:
Melissa showed the new guild business cards and distributed them to
members.  She shared a black and white peasant dress, an antique
pillow case and a beautiful dotted Swiss embroidered ‘Easter dress
with a blue slip made by Elissa.  Eloise was gorgeous in this piece of
Easter confection.

Deanna wowed us with a darling brown/blue paisley skirt with ribbon
hem and brown elastic waist.  Fabric was from Farmhouse Fabrics.  A
beautiful Christening gown/ lace jacket and bonnet that she did in a
class with Gail Doane made from white voile and French laces. Then she
attended a class with Jan Kerton where she made a Blackberry Brambles
Sewing Organizer a with wool embroidery…Another Gail Doane class had
Deanna busy with an embroidered flower dress with the color scheme of
white and lime green.

Patti made her own sweatshirt pattern and displayed of the shirts she
made.  One was navy blue with trim and the other was black with lace
and beads.

Sharon was proud to present two Kite wall hangings from the 1998 Fons
and Porter magazine that were finally completed in March 2013.
Machine quilting was done by Kat Marion in Georgetown.
Dot and Deanna make really cute skirts.  Dot’s was black/white chevron
elastic waist trimmed with red ruffle ribbon and a tiny black polka
dot and was accented at the waist with a red flower.   She also
presented a lime green dress with pink, yellow and blue designs in
fabric with a gathered high waist and hot pink ruffle around neck.
Pink and yellow buttons down the back completed the look.  She used
the pattern “Addyson” by Trisha’s Treasures.

Mary tickled us with a picture of an onesie with an appliqued
mustache.  Too cute!

Program:
The program was duplicate stitching presented by Kim Davis.

February 2013 meeting

HILL COUNTRY SMOCKING GUILD
February 18, 2013

Meeting called to order by President Melissa.  Eight members were in attendance.

Minutes as presented were approved.  Treasurer’s report: Balance of $1,486.98.

Committee Report:
By-laws Committee (Mary, Melissa and Elisse) reviewed by-laws and made suggestions for corrections and changes.  E-mail of proposed corrections and changes will be sent to Members this month.  There
will be discussion and then voting on any changes at the March meeting. Suggestion was made to increase dues to $20.00 annually to help defray cost of national teachers.

Communications:
Note from Patti’s husband that Patti has migraine from dilation and exam at ophthalmologists today.  She was diagnosed two weeks ago with Posterior Vitreous Detachment that may change, eventually break up and disappear, or it can stay for a long time.  Get well soon Patti!

Deanna has a house full of company and hopefully enjoying every minute
with the guests.

New Business:
Favors for national convention at Frisco, Texas have been approved for our guild to do.  Members will meet at Dot’s house on April 14th at 2 pm to assemble the favors.
Mary’s sister sent beeswax for just the cost of shipping.  Mary sent her sister a thank you note on behalf of the Hill Country Smocking Guild.

Door Prize:
Last months’ door prize was won by Kim.  She selected a thread holder box.
Melissa won this   months’ door prize which was a pattern holder box with clamp on lid.

Show and Share:
Mary proudly showed picture of grandson wearing outfit she made of onsite with appliqued ties done in fabric that match nursery themes/owls and monkeys plus bling. A picture of Oliver wearing two piece outfit with sailboat on pocket with blue gingham binding and diaper cover was made as newborn outfit
but he is just now fitting into the garment.

Melissa was wearing a silk sleeveless blouse that she made.  Fabric was from Common Thread.  She also shared bi-fold elastic that she acquired from EBay which was 10 yards for $4.00 a yard.

Dot is back from her trip where she shopped at Fabric Boutique in Boosier City, Silk Post in Little Rock and Lace Cottage in Germantown. She showed Baily’s Christmas dress of red and green stripped fabric from Peanut Butter and Jelly that she smocked in red.  Well Done. Another outstanding outfit was Beaded Bias Loop in pink and green. Pants were from Sew Beautiful #137 and top was in Sew Beautiful #131.

Elisse has been busy redoing kitchen cabinets.  After many trials of stain options she decided to paint cabinets white.  That is a lot of work but sure she will love end results!  She did attend an estate
sale and bought a treasure trove of antique baby garments and a lovely lace top and handmade, pieced lace table cover.

Roberta showed her granddaughter’s Christmas dress done which was a children’s Corner bishop pattern.  Her fabric selection was awesome with a muted red and green glass ornament motif and coordinating
fabrics on sleeves and band around hem of skirt.  Very impressive Roberta!
